A Hudson Valley film is in the news again as the film Return, shot locally in Newburgh-Beacon area was picked up for distribution by Focus World, the Online Distribution Wing of Focus Features. Return, written and directed by Liza Johnson, is the story of a young woman (Cardellini) who must adjust to civilian life after coming home from the war in Afghanistan. Focus World will be available for on-demand viewing starting February 28th.
Although Return is set in Ohio, according to producer Noah Harlan the Hudson Valley was a perfect fit, “We wanted to find an area that had a lot of those qualities to it and Newburgh made a lot of sense for us. In particular, this area had that look that we were looking for. It’s a mixture of a kind of de-industrialized landscape with a lot of natural beauty and the river.”
In addition to shooting in Newburgh and Beacon, Return made filming stops in Walden, New Windsor and Cornwall. As part of the production process, a new facility was certified, with help from the Hudson Valley Film Commission, by the New York State Governors office for Motion Picture and Television Development.
The production facility was the site of the new Motorcyclepedia Motorcycle Museum located at 250 Lake Street in Newburgh, which opened in April 2011. Owner Ted Doering has since had another soundstage certified in Newburgh, The Umbra Soundstage. Umbra has two gigantic spaces, one measuring 16,000 square feet and another tops 20,000. The soundstage is the largest between New York City and Syracuse.
Productions using this regional stage, will now qualify for the Empire State Film Production Tax Credit program. For details about the tax credit, please visit http://www.nylovesfilm.com/tax.
